Lisense fees for Amateur Radio and GMRS licenses are coming and they are raising rates.

In short… technology is to blame. The FCC indicates that costs of maintaining IT infrastructure and databases is largely the reason for increased expenses. They have implmented license automation etc and it costs money. So guess who pays for it…. US.

At any rate, you can read ALL the details here on the FCC Order or for a really good summary article go visit buytwowayradios blog.
There is only one place to go https://radioid.net

There is a menu on the left that will direct you to your purpose (Register, Support etc.) DMR FOR DUMMIES does not have any ability to help you get or change your radio id. So be sure to go to https://radioid.net FIRST.

One of the most common questions that we see is, “Hey… I setup my hotspot/new radio and I have confirmed my CPS setup, but I don’t hear anyone on X talkgroup. What gives?”

You aren’t alone! DMR is certainly such a HUGE environment that sometimes, just like HF, you have to look around to see where signals are active. Many local, regional and state talkgroups are quiet most of the time. Occasionally you will be in an area where hams are active and monitor your local talkgroups. However, this isn’t always the case.

If you are new to DMR and wanting to try out your new gear, FIRST use Parrot on Brandmeister 9990, setup as a PRIVATE CALL. If this is successful, you’ll know that your gear is configured and working properly.

Next, go visit the Brandmeister dashboard and see what is trending. One great place to check for activity is the STATS page https://brandmeister.network/?page=callstats This page will show you recent trends.

Another good page to watch is http://hose.brandmeister.network/ Bear in mind that Hoseline is under rework frequently and may not be available when you go check it. So be patient, and checkback often. Hoseline, when working will show you are real-time view of who is talking and on what talkgroup.

Many of the networks (Phoenix, TGIF and DMR MARC) all have dashboards that report talkgroup activity. So be sure to look at the network dashboard you have chosen to use.

Without a doubt, the most active talkgroup is WORLD WIDE. Don’t be afraid. Hop on there are drop your call. You might be surprised who answers you!

This is a good question, and a common one.

If your DMR data is indeed in the online DMR database, ALL USERS of the database must load that information into their peronal RADIOS. It is actually the radio itself that converts the ID into call sign and name information that shows up on the radio display.

If DMR users only update their radios a couple of times a year, they will obviously be talking to new users from time to time who aren’t in their radios database. They will only see your radio ID on their display. This isn’t your problem or something that the DMR networks can do anything about.

It is a misconception that call sign and name info shows up on radio displays automatically. It does not, unless the user is on a system that utilizes “talker alias” functionality. And talker alias functionality must be turned on in each users radio CPS for it to work anyway. Many DMR repeaters do not have the capability to pass talker alias info. Genrally, only MMDVM repeaters and hotspots have this built in. Motorola repeaters and several other commercial repeaters will only pass along the radio ID and Talkgroup ID.

If you talk to someone that doesn’t see your call sign or name, simply remind them they need to update their radio’s user database via CPS the next time they have a chance.

It finally arrived! After a year of waiting for production to begin, bugs in beta testing to be worked through… I finally have a Anytone AT-D578UV PRO in daily use. Simply put, it’s AWESOME!

I know. You are probably thinking that I’m just overwhelmed with actually having a radio that has been hyped up for so long, but here’s the truth; it works just like the hype said.

It is a complete Dual Mode (Analog/DMR) Tri-Band Radio (144/220/440) that is build well and doesn’t have any glaring issues that I have come across… “yet”.

I was immediately impressed with how heavy the box was. This was an early sign of high-quality manufacturing to me, even before opening the cardboard packaging lid. I said to myself, “Wow this thing is heavy!” I knew right away it was built like a tank and had a good heat sink.

All around this radio screams QUALITY. Here is a quick list of awesomeness:

Great microphone. It’s physically heavy. Typical of a Moto-style mic. There is a full feature of buttons that feel good to press. Built-in mic speaker, if you’re into that sort of thing, that you can turn on/off via software or menu. Basically, you can run the whole radio from the microphone if you so choose.

As mentioned before, the radio is solid. It has a huge heat sink design and a rear-mounted fan, which can be activated by one of three modes ptt/temperature/ or both. This baby is never going to get hot.

The display is bright and easy to read the main info like channel name etc.

The audio is loud and clear. The internal speaker is really decent for it’s size and does have some bass character that most tiny speakers are lacking.

The rubber buttons on the front panel of the radio body are of a good size and have a really nice click to the button press. All button functions are programmable via software to your liking.

The volume twist knobs are smooth and just sticky enough that I’m not worried about bumping them accidentally.

The channel knob is stiff and has a clearly distinctive click during rotation.

The CPS software is just like the 868 and 878. So if you are familiar with those, you are ahead of the game. If you are not, then just assume the CPS software is typical for a DMR radio.

The USB programming port is conveniently located on the front left-side of the radio, so it’s easy to access.

The only TINY cons that I noticed were the following:

When you power on the radio and it goes through it’s BOOT phase, the speaker on the hand mic makes an open squelch sound for a few hundred milliseconds, even though I have the speaker mic disabled in the programming. It’s not annoying or even loud, it’s just something I noticed and kind of thought… hmmm that’s weird.

When you PTT, the speaker makes a small *pop* sound. Difficult to hear when installed in a vehicle and the motor is running, but quite noticeable otherwise.

I’m not a huge fan of the A/B audio setup, but it’s workable. You have two volume knobs to adjust and a manual band-muting capability. So programming the custom buttons becomes a good solution. But it won’t automatically mute the sub-band if you are active on the opposite band. At least that I could see. If I’m wrong about this, please contact us. The manual isn’t at all clear about how this is supposed to work.

The display is the same size as the Anytone HTs, so if you are big into looking at S-Meter readings… forget about that. You are SOL. When you install the radio mobile and it’s two feet away from your eyes, there are going to be a lot of blinky blobs on the screen that you can’t tell what they are, but like I said earlier, the important info is easy to read.

The firmware update drop-down menu via CPS v1.03 doesn’t work. You have to navigate via Explorer to your hard-drive and click on the Firmware update executable to get it to launch. Not a huge thing and a small bug I’m sure will get fixed in the next CPS update.

Other than these minor gripes, the radio is still amazing and probably the BEST non-HF rig I have bought in my ham career. I’m not at all sorry for waiting for this. It is worth it!

From Jerry Wanger……..

AnyTone is prepared to give us prices and specifications at the end of July and to start selling them in August. They said they are still working on features so if anyone thinks they know what the radio will do is only speculating. The only ones who currently have this radio is their beta testers. They did loan one of their radios to be shown at a HAM show in Germany. They have not been given FCC approval yet so any hardware features is subject to change. The rest of this section is going to be devoted to speculation and why I believe it is true.

The radio is going to be tri-band. I believe this true for the following reasons.

AnyTone said their radio was going to be tri-band
Their AT-D878UV is capable of tri-band but was not designed for that purpose. All they need to do for a production model is have the RF power amplifier work on the third band and have the appropriate filters work on all three bands.

They need to be better than the Tytera 9600 or the Connect Systems CS800D if they want to be dominant in the market like they are with their dual band handheld. They have other multiband radios so they probably know how to technically implement it. The only thing I could see against them having this tri-band capability is because they might have problems getting it FCC approved.

The features are going to be as good or better than the AT-D878UV.
When designing a new product it is much easier to start with an existing product and modify it rather than starting from scratch. Therefore you can expect all of the relevant features that is in their existing portable to be in their new mobile. You will also find new features because the hardware design is different. The only way possible this is not true if they had a development team start developing the mobile before the portable was almost finished. This is not likely because they probably would not have developed the mobile if the portable was not successful.

The radio is going to be true dual receive.
The prototype that I seen about a year ago was a dual receive radio. Only one of the channels could be digital at the same time as the other but it would of been possible for both channels to be analog at the same time. This is a feature that many HAMS want so they will most likely keep that feature in the final version. It is unlikely that dual receive would cause problems with FCC certification.

The radio will not have a removable head but their approach might not matter.
In their prototype, they had all of their baseband circuitry in the head and all of the RF circuitry in the chassis. This makes it very difficult to have a removable head. However, with just a small modification to the design, it would be possible.

From everything I have seen so far, it looks like they are going to have a non removable front panel but with a Bluetooth extension to allow them to have a combination speaker mike with a display that could effectively be considered a remote head.

I am not sure if there would be any RF propagation problems if the radio is in the trunk with the Bluetooth head in the passenger compartment. You definitely could not reliably go beyond 10 meters.

I believe there are two negative things with this approach. The first is the size of the microphone might be too large to be comfortable because of the display and the second is the need to recharge the microphone. It should be noted that Hytera already has a radio using similar approach and I have not heard anything negative about their radio.

One of our competitors thinks the price is going to be $350. This is probably based on my speculation because they advertised their radio in Alibaba to see if their would be any takers at this price. However, the final price is going to be based on competition and what they think their radio is worth.
AnyTone has not been shy about raising their price above their competitors because they think their radio is better than then everybody else. Their only true competitor at this time is the Connect Systems CS-800D. When the FCC part 90 version is released, it will sell for $399. I would expect the AnyTone to be priced between $350 – $450 because of that.

Getting your own AT-D578UV DMR Mobile
To get one, just e-mail to jerry@connectsystems.com with the subject line AT-D578UV and your name in the body of the e-mail.

We will keep track of the order we receive them and use that to determine the order we will sell them. When the time is getting closer to actually getting the radio, I will then ask you to give us a deposit for the radio. If we don’t get the deposit, then you will loose your place in line.

We do not actually know how much it will cost us or how much we will actually sell it for. The only thing I can say is we will sell it at the lowest price AnyTone will allow us and we will meet any other deals our competitors might give. Of course you get the best customer service of any of the sellers out there.

We will not ask for the deposit until we know how much the radio will cost you. You can get your deposit back anytime before the radio is shipped.
